Nature Parks in Galicia

Galicia, in the northwest of Spain, is a region of lush forests, wild coastlines, deep river valleys, and unique ecosystems. It’s home to several protected natural parks, perfect for hiking, birdwatching, kayaking, or simply relaxing in nature.


1. Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park (Parque Nacional Marítimo-Terrestre das Illas Atlánticas de Galicia)

  • Location: Off the coasts of Pontevedra and A Coruña.
  • Islands Included: Cíes, Ons, Sálvora, Cortegada.
  • Highlights:
    • Crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches, and important seabird colonies.
    • Rodas Beach (Cíes) was once named the best beach in the world by The Guardian.
  • Activities: Hiking, snorkeling, boat tours (permit required in high season).
  • Protection status: National Park since 2002.

2. Fragas do Eume Natural Park

  • Location: A Coruña province, near Pontedeume.
  • Landscape: One of the best-preserved Atlantic rainforests in Europe.

  • Highlight: The medieval Caaveiro Monastery, hidden deep in the forest.

3. Baixa Limia – Serra do Xurés Natural Park

  • Location: Southern Galicia (Ourense), on the Portuguese border.
  • Landscape: Mountains, granite formations, hot springs, and ancient Roman roads.
  • Wildlife: Garrano wild horses, wolves, golden eagles.
  • Cultural sites: Roman ruins and old villages.
  • Status: Part of a UNESCO Transboundary Biosphere Reserve with Portugal’s Peneda-Gerês National Park.

4. Monte Aloia Natural Park

  • Location: Pontevedra province, near Tui.
  • Landscape: Hills and rock formations with panoramic views over the Miño River Valley.
  • Special feature: Sacred mountain with ancient walls, ruins, and a small chapel.
  • Access: Well-maintained, perfect for shorter hikes or family outings.

5. Corrubedo Dunes and Lagoons Natural Park (Complexo Dunar de Corrubedo e Lagoas de Carregal e Vixán)

  • Location: Near the Ría de Arousa, A Coruña province.
  • Features:
    • Giant moving sand dune (over 1 km long and up to 20 m high).
    • Freshwater and saltwater lagoons with rich biodiversity.
    • Top birdwatching destination: flamingos, herons, and waders.
  • Visitor Center: Offers educational exhibits about the park’s ecology.

6. Serra da Enciña da Lastra Natural Park

  • Location: Eastern Galicia (Ourense province).
  • Landscape: Karst terrain with caves and deep gorges.
  • Special feature: Largest bat colony in Galicia.
  • Flora: Unique Mediterranean-Atlantic mix of plant species.
