The location is simply stunning. The church is situated close to a stream called “Rego De Portarrios” and overlooks a green valley. All around you, there is a meadow full of colourful flowers and countless trees. It is incredibly quiet and peaceful; here, you really feel embraced by nature.

For history buffs: What makes this church special?
San Pedro de Bembibre is no ordinary village church; it is a national monument with a rich history dating back to the 12th century. Here you can see the perfect blend of Romanesque architecture and the influence of powerful noble families.
The Knights Templar and a mysterious date
The church was originally built in 1191. This date is carved on the south portal (corresponding to 1229 in the old Spanish calendar).
Knights Templar history: There are strong indications that the Knights Templar once held sway here. The House of Taboada: In 1238, the Abbey of Oseira donated the complex to the House of Taboada. Master Martín: The design is attributed to a master builder who likely collaborated with the famous Master Martín from the Ribeira Sacra.
Architecture: From Romanesque to Baroque
The building has a single nave and a semicircular apse. The façade is a feast for the eyes, featuring three archivolts decorated with geometric patterns and historic capitals.
Interior: Although the apse is dominated by a Baroque altarpiece, there are still treasures to be seen. These include a 16th-century pulpit and beautiful murals depicting biblical scenes and saints such as Saint Christopher.

The power of the counts
The church is inextricably linked to the Taboada family. In 1413, they built the nearby castle-like manor house. In the chancel, you will find the Baroque mausoleum of Xoán Taboada Ribadeneira y Figueroa, the first Count of Taboada, who was buried here in 1681.
San Pedro de Bembibre is more than a church; it is a monument in stone that illustrates the transition from religious orders to the nobility, preserved within the beautiful landscape of Spain.
