Car Insurance in Spain for Expats: What You Need to Know
If you move to Galicia, a car quickly stops being a luxury. Public transport in the villages is limited, distances are real, and the best places we write about are rarely reachable any other way. So sooner or later every newcomer faces the same question: how do you arrange car insurance in Spain, and what should you look for?
In this article we walk through the basics and explain how Feather, an insurer aimed at expats, approaches it.
A note on how we wrote this: this article is based on research, mainly the information Feather publishes on its own website. We have not taken out Feather’s car insurance ourselves, although we do use Feather for our health insurance. This page also contains an affiliate link, which we explain at the end.
Why car insurance is mandatory
In Spain you need at least third-party liability insurance to drive and to register a car. Without proof of insurance you cannot legally be on the road. This is not something you can postpone until you have settled in.
Beyond the legal minimum, insurance protects you financially. A serious accident can lead to liability claims for injuries that reach very high amounts, and even small traffic violations can become expensive. For someone who has just moved and is building a new life, that is a risk worth covering properly.
The problem many expats run into
Most Spanish insurers do not take your driving history from another country into account. After years of careful driving in the Netherlands, Germany or the UK, you can still be treated like a new driver and pay accordingly.
This is where Feather positions itself differently. According to the company, it carries your claim-free history across borders. If you have driven claim-free for the last five years, you are eligible for a discount. Feather says this approach can mean savings of up to 60%, but your own price depends on your situation, so the only way to know is to request a quote.
What Feather offers
Based on the information on its website, these are the points that matter most for newcomers:
- Coverage from kilometer 0, including 24/7 roadside assistance.
- Coverage across Europe. You are covered in the EU plus Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Gibraltar, Andorra and Monaco. Roadside assistance and personal liability also extend to the United Kingdom and a wider list of Green Card countries.
- Legal and fines protection. Feather helps you handle traffic fines and appeals. If you lose driving points in Spain, it covers the mandatory re-education course and exam fees.
- Support in English. From sign-up to claims, the process is in English, and everything is managed online through your account.
The English support is not a small thing. Insurance terms are difficult enough in your own language, and a claim is the worst moment to discover that nobody understands you.
Your foreign licence is fine
A question we often see from readers: can I insure a car in Spain with my foreign driving licence? According to Feather, yes. It accepts licences from any country, including while you are in the process of converting yours to a Spanish one. International driving permits are usually valid for only one year, so this gives you some breathing room.
Limits you should know about
Before you request a quote, check these conditions:
- The car must be registered in Spain and have a Spanish licence plate. A car that is still on foreign plates cannot be insured this way.
- Imported vehicles are a problem in some cases. Feather currently only covers vehicles with a trim level that is recognised in Spain. If you bring a car from the Netherlands or another country, check this first.
- Additional drivers. You can authorise occasional drivers, such as family or friends visiting you, if they are over 25 and have at least two years of driving experience. Legal defence and driver accident cover only apply if you add them as named drivers.
If you are still in the middle of importing and registering your car, our guide on registering a foreign car in Spain explains the steps in the right order.
How to get a quote
The quoting process takes about two minutes online. Feather assesses you as a driver and prices the policy as if you had been driving in Spain all your life. If you prefer to talk to someone first, you can book a call with an advisor.
Get your car insurance quote from Feather
Before you sign, read the policy documents. Feather publishes an Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) that lists what is and is not covered. Compare that with what you actually need, especially if your car is new or valuable.
Our take
Car insurance is one of those things you only think about when something goes wrong, which is exactly why it is worth arranging properly at the start. For expats, the combination of recognised driving history and English-language support is the main reason to look at Feather. Whether it is the cheapest option for you is something only a quote can tell you, so we would always compare it with at least one other offer.
