What Wildfires Do to Galician Nature

This year we watched two sizeable wildfires burn uncomfortably close to our village. Close enough that we packed a bag “just in case,” close enough to smell the smoke for days, and close enough that we started paying much closer attention to what actually happens to the land once the flames move on.

Galicia burns more than most people expect. It doesn’t fit the mental image of Spain as a scorched, dry country, because Galicia is green, wet and mountainous. But that green comes with a catch: fast-growing eucalyptus plantations, dense pine, steep valleys and long dry summer spells make this region one of the most fire-prone in the country. 2026 has been a particularly bad year across southern Europe, and Galicia had its share of early-season fires well before the summer even properly started.

So what does a wildfire actually leave behind, and how long before the land looks like itself again?

What burns first

The following is based on our own observations and on research into forest ecology, not on any professional background in wildfire management. We’re describing what we’ve seen and read, not offering expert analysis.

The first thing to go is the litter layer: the dead leaves, twigs, pine needles and organic material sitting on top of the soil. This layer is what keeps the ground stable, retains moisture, and slowly feeds nutrients back into the earth. Once it burns away, especially on Galicia’s steep hillsides, the soil underneath is exposed and vulnerable. The real damage often isn’t the fire itself but what happens in the days after, when the first proper rain hits bare slopes and washes topsoil straight into the nearest stream.

Eucalyptus, which covers a large part of Galicia’s commercial forestry land, actually resprouts quickly after fire. It’s practically built for it. That’s good news for the timber industry but not necessarily for biodiversity, since fast eucalyptus regrowth tends to crowd out the native oak, chestnut and birch that would otherwise slowly reclaim the land.

Water quality takes a hit too. Ash and sediment run into rivers and streams after a fire, and that has a visible short-term effect on the life in them.

What we noticed with our own fires

What struck us most after both fires was how patchy the damage looked up close. From a distance a burned hillside looks uniformly black, but walking closer afterwards showed pockets that barely burned next to areas that were stripped completely, depending on wind, slope and what was growing there. That patchiness turns out to matter a lot for how fast things recover.

How long recovery actually takes

This is where the timeline gets less dramatic than the immediate aftermath suggests, in both directions. Recovery starts faster than you’d think, but full recovery takes far longer than most people assume.

  • Soil fertility and first green growth: within one to five years, ash actually acts as a short-term fertiliser and the first grasses and herbs push through.
  • Shrubland and young growth (broom, gorse, eucalyptus resprouting): visibly established within three to ten years.
  • Mature mixed native forest, the oak and chestnut woodland that many people picture as “real” Galician forest, can take decades, and in badly eroded areas over a century, to properly re-establish.

The deciding factor isn’t just the fire itself but what happens to the soil afterwards. A fire followed by heavy rain on a bare slope can set recovery back by years through erosion alone. A fire followed by gentler weather and quick replanting, or natural reseeding from nearby unburned patches, recovers noticeably faster.

It’s also worth saying that “recovery” doesn’t always mean the land returns to what it was. Repeated fires on the same land tend to favour whatever regenerates fastest, which in Galicia often means more eucalyptus and less of the native mixed woodland that supports the widest range of wildlife. Each fire cycle can nudge the landscape further from what it looked like before.

Living with it

None of this is meant to be alarmist. Wildfire has always been part of this landscape, and Galician forests have adapted to fire cycles over a very long time. What’s changed is frequency and intensity, driven by hotter, drier summers and by the amount of flammable eucalyptus planted across the region.

For us, living here now, it’s changed how we watch the sky in summer. We keep half an eye on the wind direction, and we know our evacuation route without thinking about it.
